If you’re a fan of George Clarke’s Old House, New Home on Channel 4, you might have spotted home renovation and Carpentry Specialists, Smooth Finish Construction. We were featured in Series 6, Episode 1, which aired on Sunday, 5th January 2020, at 8 pm. The episode showcased the transformation of an oast house bedroom in Faversham. What initially began as a simple redecoration project took a surprising turn when George visited the house for the design visit, and a larger renovation became the plan, with home renovation and Carpentry Specialists playing a vital role.
The homeowner invited us, Smooth Finish Construction, to join the project, which involved constructing a mezzanine floor to create a second level in the tall oast room. The unique challenge lay in working with the angles of the oast structure. Moreover, we had to work within a tight timeframe and coordinate with other contractors on site.
We collaborated closely with room designer Karl of Enviro Consultants to bring the rendering visuals to life. Regular meetings with the TV company’s design team ensured that the build aligned with their vision for the final ‘reveal.’
Our home renovation team, successfully completed the project on schedule, allowing the production company to decorate and prepare for filming. We were delighted to learn that George Clarke was particularly impressed with our joinery work, and our design concept, which mirrored the original beams with the exposed construction beneath the new mezzanine floor.
This experience marked our first venture into working with a television company, and it was an enjoyable, albeit slightly nerve-wracking, endeavor.
